Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are like a Star Trek universe composed of nothing but red shirts.

It should not have been that hard, I think, to make a fully satisfying film version of Andy Weir's The Martian.
"Exodus: Gods and Kings" is a DeMille-worthy spectacle, but an intellectually incoherent mess.
Prometheus's biggest problem is not a lack of ambition, but of execution. The film is at no loss for ideas, but it can't really pause to catch its breath long enough to develop any of them.
My dominant impression, walking out of Ridley Scott's Gladiator Tw...er Robin Hood, was that it is nice to see Scott Grimes (closer to Party of Five mode than E.R. mode) getting work. My second thought was that Mark Strong could make a career out of playing pre-20th Century villains.
