    Albert Nobbs (Garcia, 2011)

In theory, Albert Nobbs is close to my idea of a perfect movie. In practice, however, it is the exact opposite. I have every reason to fall in love with the titular character, played by Glenn Close, and, yet, I didn’t even like him.

About Schmidt (Payne, 2002) — 10 Years Later

I am not sure what it says about Alexander Payne's tragicomedy that the first thing I thought of when reviewing that scene was that, beat for beat, it was the same joke and timing from the classic episode of The Simpsons where Homer survives eating what he momentarily thinks is a poison blowfish.

    Red Tails (Hemingway, 2012)

Red Tails is an earnest, straight forward, somewhat generic, but easily likable war-action movie that will probably be both overpraised and overcritized due to it being produced by George Lucas.

    2011 Top 10

At various points in the year, I considered five different films for the top slot. Normally that might mean that there was no runaway film that I really fell in love with, but the opposite was true. The difficulty in picking just one was reflective of the different ways in which I adored each of these films.

    Making the Boys (Robey, 2011)

Making the Boys feels at times like it is seven potentially great documentaries struggling to emerge from one good one.

    I Confess (Hitchcock, 1953)

I Confess (1953) is an Alfred Hitchcock film that has flown under the radar since its premiere; the box office figures were disappointing and there has been a lack of critical analysis for this work, especially when compared to most of his American films.
