Dear Evan Hansen (Chbosky, 2021)

It didn’t hurt that I saw it the same week as The Eyes of Tammy Faye, another movie about a liar who bilks money out who is supposed to be sympathetic. Evan Hansen doesn’t gloss over the ugliness and hurtfulness of the lies even while giving us some insight into why lying is just so damn easy and telling the truth can feel just a little like suicide.

I’ll have more to say. There will be much mocking of this film from those trained from High School through Film Journalism Apprentice School to despise everything that is not cynical. I shrug at them. In the overly processed Marvel/Pixar age, I like messy.
