In each case, there is a conflict between idealism and reality. Capra was not necessarily the bucolic filmaker that his later films seemed to suggest to the the general public. Funnily enough, I remember being fascinated by it and assumed that with my maturity and more racial awareness, that I would find it offensive now. But I did not. I still find it a fascinating movie. It is regretable that some of the actors are in "yellow-face" and that asian actors weren't found to play the parts, but Nils Asther is so good as General Yen - I totally forgvie him and Capra.
