		<description>Peter, you are quite right, of course. I wonder how many of Verhoeven&#039;s cast were in on his intentions? For some reason, I keep thinking of the passages in &lt;em&gt;The Celluloid Closet&lt;/em&gt; where one of the participants remembers the decision to play &lt;em&gt;Ben Hur&lt;/em&gt; as a gay film and Wyler (I think it was) basically saying, okay, fine, just so long as nobody tells Heston.</description>

One key difference is that one could plausibly argue that Paul Verhoeven intended &lt;i&gt;Starship Troopers&lt;/i&gt; to be a parody of fascist youth-skewing propaganda films, whereas there does not seem to be any such ironic purpose behind J.J. Abrams&#039; take on &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt;.</description>
