For some reason, I keep thinking of the passages in <em>The Celluloid Closet</em> where one of the participants remembers the decision to play <em>Ben Hur</em> as a gay film and Wyler (I think it was) basically saying, okay, fine, just so long as nobody tells Heston. One key difference is that one could plausibly argue that Paul Verhoeven intended <i>Starship Troopers</i> to be a parody of fascist youth-skewing propaganda films, whereas there does not seem to be any such ironic purpose behind J.J.
