Corteo coming to Raleigh

When Cirque du Soleil last visited Raleigh, it was to present Crystal, an entertaining blend of ice-capades and acrobatics.

The troupe returns to the PNC Arena next month with Corteo. The script swaps out skates for shoes and the winter theme for a Spanish one, but the hallmarks stunts and pageantry that make Cirque du Soleil immensely popular are still on display.

The one challenge I am anxious to see if Cirque du Soleil has solved in translating its show(s) from tent to arena is that of the greater distance separating audience and performers. While Crystal did utilize PNC’s hockey rink to add speed and movement aplenty, it was perhaps harder to admire the costumes and set design.

Corteo boasts 51 actors and central curtains inspired by the Eiffel Tower. The narrative at the heart of the show appears to be a welcome return to a more familiar circus-like environment, and since the show originated in 2005, the troupe has had ample time to perfect the various acts comprising the show.
