The Grand Budapest Hotel takes Top Honors from North Carolina Film Critics

Birdman, Boyhood, Whiplash, and The Grand Budapest Hotel  led the list of nominees from the North Carolina Film Critics Association (NCFCA) earlier this week.

Each of the films was nominated for Best Narrative Film and earned nominations for its director and at least one of its cast. Birdman led the way with six total nominations. Boyhood earned five nominations, and The Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash each earned four.

Calvary got nods for Best Narrative Film, Best Actor (Brendan Gleeson), and Best Original Screenplay, but director John Michael McDonagh was shut out of the Best Director category. By contrast, David Fincher and Rosamund Pike earned nominations for Gone Girl, but the film itself failed to get a nod for Best Narrative Film.

Other surprises included Best Adapted Screenplay nods for Guardians of the Galaxy and Snowpiercer, and a Best Actress nomination for Essie Davis of The Babadook.

A full list of nominations is below. The NCFCA will announce its winners on Sunday, January 4, 2015
